Here you see one of the side entrances of a Logan Square neighborhood landmark, boarded up once again. It had been shut down in 2005 for numerous city code violations, and had been open again for less than a year. I think I remember the banners announcing the grand reopening for Black Friday. This past weekend a fire completely destroyed one section of the building that spans several blocks. I didn't get any good shots of the damage unfortunately. But I like the starkness of this image.
There has been controversy surrounding the Megamall especially since its 2005 closing. A lot of people wanted to have it closed down and turned into a park. That certainly would have been better than condos, but I'm not convinced developers wouldn't figure out a way to throw some up on the valuable land. Although the current building isn't the prettiest place, I think keeping it around preserves some of the neighborhood's ethnic and economic diversity. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
