Theme Day: When People Think of Chicago They Think...

Picture 020

So this is what I got going out to get my theme day shot at the last minute. Somewhat difficult lighting conditions, but look closely at the statue and you can see streaks of the snow that was falling yesterday morning. And that's one thing Chicago is known for: crappy winters. And boy did it keep snowing all through last night! OK I really need to start talking less about the weather here.

So this statue of Harry Caray is in front of Wrigley Field at the corner of Addison and Sheffield. If you have a little familiarity with the Cubs you likely know of him and his catchphrase: "Holy Cow!" For those that don't, Harry was the TV announcer for Cubs games for most of the 80s. He somehow started the tradition of leading the crowd in the seventh inning singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and was also known for his distinct and kind of wacky manner of speaking. Quite a unique local legend. Here's the base of the statue inscribed with how he would start off the seventh inning stretch:

Oh and I can't help bringing up weather, or at least the seasons again. I can't wait for winter to be over! I wanna go to a dang baseball game!

...for it's root, root, root for the Cardinals.
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's

At the old ball game.

Did you know that Harry was a broadcaster here in St. Louis for a while before he defected to Chicago? Check his bio on Wikipedia. There's a photo of the statue that's not as good as yours.

I didn't remember that factoid until I looked him up on the 'pedia. And your comment reminded me I had another shot I wanted to put up today! Now editing the post.

Just buy a ticket for opening day. You'll see a baseball game, but the weather will probably be the same as when you took the shot.
Nice perspective on the pic (and the theme).

What a great post....I, being the suburbanite that I am, would've thought "the Sears Tower" but this is so much more appropriate!~! Nicely done....and now, about that snow..........

Great post...may the snow cease soon! When I think of Chicago, I think of shopping and yachts in the harbor. :-)

See, here I was thinking, how he is getting to get a shot of the wind? Cause that is what I think of when I think Chicago. Well and those crappy Cubs. ;)

I haven't seen as realistic a sculpture in a long long time. It's a great one.
